WORDS FROM THE PRESIDENT, TONY ELLIOTT, IIDA, AIA

A lot has happened in the past few months, and I want to bring everyone up to date. I am writing this President's message from Benghazi, Libya. Yes, I am out of the country for an undetermined length of time. It is probably the shortest IIDA Indiana Chapter presidential term on record. I just want you to know that you are still in great hands with Amanda and Jennifer taking the helm. The rest of the Board is geared up to make 2010-2011 a great success. We had a Board retreat before I left the country, and we have lots of creative ideas for upcoming events. I am sure the IIDA membership will enjoy the various programs and some of our annual fun times.

My focus for the Chapter this year, was to build on educating the general public on "what is an interior designer?". The Indiana Interior Design Coalition was very successful in 2009 with the interior design legislation and today we have over 280 registered interior designers (R.I.D.) in the State of Indiana. With this momentum in place, we have already started developing partnerships with the Indiana Design Center in Carmel and we are planning joint events with the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). As a combined voice, with others in the design community, we can educate the general public on why a registered interior designer is the best choice for their project.

I am blessed to have such an experienced and creative Board to handle the new year. I hope you will welcome all of our new and returning board members:

  • Jennifer Patterson will be serving as the President-elect/Treasurer for 2010-2011. Jennifer has a great deal of experience on the Board and I feel very comfortable having her watch my back.
  • Amanda Medlen will serve as Past President and will continue to further develop our Sponsorship program.
  • Lee Boyland is continuing her term as Chapter Secretary. This past year, Lee put together a terrific Chapter submittal for the IIDA Chapter Awards program.
  • Kim Sexton will be our VP of Membership. She will help track our current members and help to develop ways to acquire new members and retain existing members.
  • This year we will have co-chairs for the Professional Development position. Lisa Ellingson and Erin Rossier are busy putting together monthly programs for the design community.
  • Dawn Ter Horst will be the VP of Communications. She has done a great job getting info posted to Facebook and LinkedIn and sending out Tweets on Twitter. She has some exciting ideas on how to get more info out thru e-blasts and a new format for our newsletter. I can't wait to see what she will come up with next.
  • Joan Bryant is new to the Board. She will be taking the office of VP of Government and Legislative Affairs. With the push to educate the general public on what an interior designer does, I am counting on Joan to help spread the word.
  • Misty Chandler is also new to the Board. She has been a terrific golf outing chairperson. This year she is also taking on the task of being our VP of City Centers.
  • Nicki Hellem is our Associate Member Director and has already put together new study sessions for the upcoming new NCIDQ tests.
  • Marj Sparks and David Harmon will serve as our Industry Member Directors. Both of them have a great deal of Board experience with other organizations that they have participated in over the past few years. We are lucky to have them help with our Board.
  • Nancy Wright is helping out another year as our Environmental Liaison. She has been planning study sessions for the new LEED exam and was very involved with last year's Building Green Symposium.
  • Myron Cromer is our Director of Student Affairs. He is in contact with a number of local colleges and universities in order to strengthen our Chapter involvement with the students.

Many of the Board members have already been busy developing relationships between the IIDA Chapter and various community groups. In September, designers will be helping with the design of Samantha's House. This past September with the help of IndyHub, we were involved in the annual Oranje event (see article below).

We are all facing tough economic times and the Chapter is planning to bring as many CEU sessions and informative programs to our members, in order to make your financial commitment to the Chapter a worthwhile investment. We hope that you will take advantage of the various opportunities to serve the Chapter and the profession and meet new faces and develop new relationships. Networking is very important in these tough times and I am sure you will develop great friendships. Keep an eye on the IIDA Indiana Google Calendar for the upcoming events. Our goal is to have our monthly events on the third Wednesday of each month, so block out the third day of the third week on your Outlook calendar.

A New iPhone Application
by Tony Elliott, IIDA, AIA

Our own IIDA Indiana Chapter President, Tony Elliott, announces the availability of Wall IT™ an iPhone application that enables architects, designers and "do-it-yourselfers" to calculate the amount of paint and/or wall covering needed to finish an interior space.

Wall-IT™ provides professional designers and "do-it-yourselfers" the ability to quickly calculate the amount of materials needed for a project.  The application creates projects that are stored as active/inactive or complete projects.  Each project has an unlimited number of rooms that can be stored within the project and can be reused at a later date.  The application operates in either English or Metric units of measure.  Wall IT™ allows the user to email results to suppliers, clients, or themselves.

"We have a number of app that we want to develop for the design community." said Tony Elliott, AIA, IIDA, and President of the Elliott Group. "We want to give designers or DIY's tools to help design and evaluate spaces.  We want these tools to be available on the mobile phone, so it is in easy reach of any design professional.  Our first app is a robust materials calculator that will make it easy for users to create accurate estimates for themselves and their clients."

Wall IT™ is available on the iTunes App Store for owners of iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.  Look for more applications for the design community in the near future from the Elliott Group.

2010 HOLLYWOOD GOLF OUTING

by Theresa Dury

IIDA rolled out the red carpet for this year's golf outing. The Golf Club of Indiana once again graciously opened their course to over 100 designer and vendor golfers. The Hollywood film theme was complete with movie themed crazy holes and refreshment carts in addition to paparazzi running around the course.

Registration began at 11, and while people mingled they could dine on hot dogs, chips and margaritas or get their photos taken on the Red Carpet. The shot gun start began around 11:30, with the temperatures hovering around 90. A brief shower did not dampen the spirits, but it did help heat things up for later in the day! It also made an interesting hair day for some.

To help the golfers take their mind off the heat many of the crazy hole and beer cart sponsors gave Oscar worthy performances. Golfers were entertained by the likes of Willy Wonka, Alice in Wonderland, Johnny Cash and the crew from Something about Mary.

Dinner was served and prizes raffled. All and all another successful outing. Thanks again to all the vendors and designers for their support of this event.

ORANJE_logopngresize2

by Nicki Hellem

This year the IIDA Indiana Chapter was asked by IndyHub to partner with them for the design and construction of their lounge for Oranje.  Oranje is an annual event to showcase the talent of local artists and musicians.  It took place on Saturday, September 18th from 8:00 PM to 2:00 AM.  The theme of our lounge was "Circling the City" that incorporated an interactive wall where participants could write the ways they enjoy our city or what they love about the city of Indianapolis.  It was an incredible evening to see the local talent of artists and musicians as well as be a part of the creation of a space where people took time to relax, mingle and interact with design.  We would like to thank IndyHub for this opportunity to help promote the arts.  Our lounge wouldn't have come to life without the volunteers from IndyHub and our IIDA members (Jessica Cook, Nicki Hellem, Dawn Ter Horst, Jae Park, Dainen Tolman, and Rebecca Dean). Thank you to all of those who participated.  And, we can't forget our sponsors and donors for the materials to create the lounge.  These included Business Furniture, MDC Wallcoverings, CM Buck & Associates, InterfaceFlor, OM Workspace, DesignTex, Maraham, Forbo, and Sensory Technologies.

StepLeader-re The American Society of Interior Designers has long recognized the key role that the NCIDQ examination plays in design practitioners' career plans. Passage of this rigorous test signifies the hallmark of professionalism in the interior design community, and alerts the public to the expertise and experience of the designer who has met this challenge. To that end, ASID created the STEP program to provide a broad perspective of the issues and information pertinent to the NCIDQ exam.

Workshop participants are provided with comprehensive workbooks that includes practicum exercises and online multiple-choice exams similar to those in the NCIDQ exam. These practice tests are administered and throughly reviewed during the workshop.
